Alizarin Crimson is the oldest synthetic deep red-crimson pigment. It is a lake pigment which when applied in strength and kept from the direct sunlight will last for many decades. Alizarin is a treat to paint with, just the sheer joy of the depth and uniqueness of color is invigorating. A beautiful bluish-red pigment from the staining family, Alizarin Crimson is listed on the basic palette of a vast majority of artists. Intense and dark in value, Alizarin Crimson mixes cleanly with most pigments to create dark mixtures and warm neutrals. A combination of Aureolin (Cobalt Yellow) and French Ultramarine with Alizarin renders a surprising range of other colors resembling everything from Burnt Sienna and Umber to Payne’s Gray, while Alizarin Crimson with French Ultramarine creates an intense purple.

Starting with 10 parts water to 1 part paint (by weight) in the palette, our chemist paints the top half of the swatch uniformly with a round brush to show the paint’s color and characteristics. For the bottom half, he dips a ¾” flat brush into the paint well just once, then applies the color in stripes until the brush is dry, which shows the color’s tone and behavior through a wash. We use these swatches for color matching during the manufacturing process.

PrimaTek Watercolors are made from naturally occuring pigments, reviving the tradition of making paints the way the Egyptians and other cultures did but with modern technology. Sourced by geologists, these unique pigments have amazing and interesting granulating properties. The luminescent watercolors add a touch of special color found in nature that regular colors cannot match. They're made from mica pigment, thin transparent particles coated with highly reflective metal oxides. They show best as glazes over darker colors and are excellent mixed with other colors adding a bit of their luminescent glow. The duochrome colors contain one pigment that bounces between two colors causing a color shift. Interference pigments display a subtle sheen and they cause refraction where a particle of light enters the paint/pigment matrix and scatters light. Iridescent colors reflect light and their semi-transparent quality adds a fascinating sense of depth to artwork. Pearlescent colors add opalescence - like an opal or pearl - to the color it's mixed or glazed with.
